GHS to offer Seal of Civic Readiness for juniors, seniors

Parents/guardians of rising juniors and seniors,

I am writing to introduce an exciting opportunity for your child to enhance their civic engagement and make a lasting impact on their community—the Seal of Civic Readiness, a prestigious recognition in New York State that highlights a student’s dedication to civic participation, community service, and the pursuit of social justice.

To provide a comprehensive civic education, we are excited to introduce two new courses that will greatly assist students in achieving the Seal of Civic Readiness: “Local Government & Leadership” and “Civic Action & Leadership.”

Local Government & Leadership: This course will delve into the structure and functioning of local government, allowing students to understand the important role it plays in shaping their community. They will explore topics such as municipal services, city planning, public policy, and the responsibilities of local officials. Through case studies and interactive discussions, students will develop a deep understanding of local governance and acquire leadership skills necessary for civic engagement.

Civic Action & Leadership: This course will empower students to become effective advocates and change-makers in their community. They will explore strategies for initiating and leading civic action campaigns, developing skills in coalition-building, public speaking, and persuasive communication. Students will learn to identify social issues, propose solutions, and work collaboratively to effect positive change. Through hands-on projects and real-world simulations, they will gain the confidence and abilities to make a lasting impact.

We highly encourage you to discuss these new course offerings with your child and consider including them in their academic plan. By participating in these courses, they will deepen their understanding of civic affairs, strengthen their leadership abilities, and further their pursuit of the Seal of Civic Readiness.

To express your interest in the program or the new courses, please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor to update their course requests by May 15.

Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions.
