Students will have the same group of peers in their classes for ELA, Science, SS and Math. Students will be mixed together with anyone from 6th grade during special area classes.
Each student is assigned to a team (Purple, Yellow or Maroon). Team placement letters will be sent home in August. The letter will state which team and homeroom teacher your student will have. ALL students in ALL grade levels get their full schedule on the first day of school.
We do not accept request for specific teachers or teams.
Please note: We do not group by ability level. ALL students are mixed up within the 3 team evenly.
School counselors also meet with all 5th grade teachers to discuss incoming 6th grade students.
There will be a placement information Google form sent out to all incoming 6th grade parents. The form will be due by May 13th.
School Counselors
There are three school counselors in the middle school:
- Mrs. Blake (currently has 7th graders)
- Mr. Toscano (currently has 8th graders)
- Mrs. Tierney (currently has 6th graders)
Each school counselor is assigned a grade, and we follow that grade throughout their entire middle school career.
Mr. Toscano will be the school counselor for this incoming 6th grade class.

Homework
- Most nights students will have homework for each of their classes.
- Homework does impact the final marking period grade for each class so it is important that students complete their homework each night.
- Many students rely on homework assignments to be posted in Google Classroom, which most of the time they are. However, we highly encourage students to have a homework notepad or assignment pad that they have to write down their assignments each night. It’s a great way to keep them organized since they will have numerous subjects and homework assignments to keep track of.
School Communication
There are many ways to keep informed on what is occurring in our school such as:
- CJH Newsletter
- Daily Announcements
- District webpage
- Google Classrooms
- School Messenger Notifications
All teachers and staff have emails, so please contact your child’s teacher with any concerns. You can also contact your child’s school counselor, social worker, school psychologist, nurse and principals if further assistance is needed.
Cafeteria & Lunch
- All 6th graders eat at the same time, which is period 5 (10:46 a.m. – 11:28 a.m.)
- Students can bring or buy their lunch
- Free and reduced lunch applications are available from the nurse, main office, and also inside the district’s school calendar
- Menus are posted on the district webpage and CJH announcements
- There is no formal recess at the middle school
- Breakfast is also available for students to eat before first period begins
Discipline
- The school is dedicated to providing a safe and productive learning environment for all students.
- Every student will receive a copy of the school’s code of conduct. This document needs to be reviewed by the student and parent/guardian as well as signed by both to acknowledge reading the code of conduct and agreeing to abide by it.
- Any concerns or questions you may have regarding discipline matters, please feel free to reach out to the building principal and/or assistant principal.
Lockers
- Every student has the opportunity to have a locker.
- Each locker is assigned to a specific student, and each student is given a school-issued lock. No locks can be brought from home.
- Do not share your locker combination with anyone, and remember to LOCK your LOCKERS!
- It’s highly suggested you leave all valuables at home as the school is not responsible for items that are lost or stolen.
Helpful Tips for Transitioning to Middle School
- Set realistic expectations and goals with your child.
- Create a calm study time and location for your child.
- Communicate with your child’s teachers.
- Reach out to support staff with questions and concerns.
- Encourage your child to get involved with school activities.
- Help your child foster independence by encouraging them to reach out to teachers for help, support, and questions instead of you emailing the teachers for them. Help them learn to be their own self-advocates and take ownership of their education.
- Monitor your child’s social media accounts (if they have any) and their cell phones (if they have one)!!
We look forward to seeing your children next year!
