This week’s spotlight is on Goshen High School History Teacher Christopher Hoey, an educator who is new to the district this year.

Originally from Long Island, Hoey earned his bachelor’s degree in History from the SUNY University at Albany in 2013 and his master’s degree in Secondary Education from SUNY Stony Brook University in 2015.

After graduating, he worked at the Sachem, Herricks, and Wallkill school districts as well as at McGann-Mercy High School. After moving to Orange County and spending two years at Wallkill, Hoey found his new home at the Goshen Central School District this fall.

The history teacher said he chose Goshen because it is a beautiful community with a rich history.

“My wife and I have lived in Orange County for two years now, and Goshen is where we would like to lay our roots,” said Hoey.

His goal is to make Social Studies material as engaging and interesting as possible for his students, he said.

“I want them to see history as a tool to make sense of the world,” Hoey said. “I want them to understand that the personal histories of individuals add together to define a generation or nation. No one’s history is irrelevant.”

This year, Hoey said he is most looking forward to the connections he will make with his colleagues, students, and the Goshen community at large.

“I look forward to becoming a member of that community more than anything else,” he said.

Outside work, Hoey said he and his wife enjoy “hiking, traveling, and being homebodies at the same time.”

As someone who is always excited to try something new, his favorite interests have been computers and motorcycles since he was a child.

“I have continued to love them into adulthood,” he said.

Welcome to the Goshen community, Christopher Hoey. And thank you so much for all you do. We appreciate you!
