The Goshen Central School District welcomes Erica Cruz as the new assistant principal for Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School and Goshen Intermediate School. She works alongside SAS Principal Kristin Driscoll and GIS Principal Dr. Matthew Wentworth.

After spending the last 16 years working for the New York City Department of Education, Cruz joins the district with experience teaching elementary students  in a variety of classroom settings,–including self-contained, integrated co-teaching, transitional bilingual and dual language. She has also served as a literacy coach and is embarking on her 12th year as an adjunct instructor for CUNY Hunter College.

“As a resident of Orange County, [I believe] Goshen stands out for delivering a high-quality education and being a tight-knit community with a warm and inviting atmosphere,” Cruz said. “It is this unique combination that fueled my desire to join and make meaningful contributions in this community.”

The new assistant principal has degrees in economics, special education and educational leadership and advanced certificates in bilingual education, school building and school district leadership. Cruz earned a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and master’s degrees from Hunter College and the College of St. Rose.

Cruz is most looking forward to collaborating with staff and families, as well as witnessing the growth and development of SAS and GIS students throughout the year, she said.

Among her goals are relationship-building and strengthening the partnership between Goshen’s two elementary schools.

“With her extensive knowledge of educational practices, she is poised to make a significant impact on our students’ learning journeys,” said Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School Principal Kristin Driscoll. “What truly sets her apart is her remarkable ability to form genuine connections with our staff, students and families.

“I believe she will be a seamless fit within the elementary administrative team, acting as a bridge between the two schools to help foster collaboration and enhance the educational experience for all.”

Outside work, Cruz enjoys going to the movies, watching reality TV and traveling with her husband and son.
