May 3, 2010
– In honor of Earth Day, students in Teegan
Kennedy’s fourth grade class at the Goshen
Intermediate School spent the day planting
marigolds, petunias and daisies around trees and the
Goshen Intermediate School sign in the school’s
front lawn.
Throughout the school year, the students have
studied recycling and the importance of cleaning up
the planet. They’ve learned about nonrenewable
resources, such as oil, and the importance of
keeping our air and water clean. Most recently,
students have discussed the green house effect and
global warming.
Armed with this knowledge, the students were eager
to do something positive. While sporting “I love the
Earth” temporary tattoos and wearing green recycled
bracelets stating “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; I can
make a difference,” the students got busy planting.
The soil was tilled and prepped the night before the
planting by student
Lillian Armistead and her parents. The next day, the
classmates mixed fertilizer with the soil and
planted the flowers that were purchased by Kennedy,
Principal Mary Ann Knight and the Armisteads.
After weeding an existing daffodil bed and planting
more flowers, the students mulched the areas,
watered the flowers and took turns digging a hole to
plant a Dogwood tree on the side lawn.
“It was a great day and the parent volunteers were a
tremendous help,” said Kennedy. “The kids had so
much fun and I was thrilled to see my students
working hard and enjoying themselves.”
In addition, the students planted seeds inside the
classroom and took home a baby Maple tree to plant.
