Indoor Track and Field running forward
By Coaches J.B. Russo and Kyle Lewis
The sport of Track
and Field is unique in that it is both an individual
sport as well as a team sport. Athletes run or
compete in field events as individuals in order to
gain points for the entire team. They also compete
as relay teams to gain team points, so it is very
different from other team sports.
Indoor track is a
different sport in that none of the area schools
have their own indoor track facility. All schools
compete in one indoor track facility located at West
Points Gillis field house, once a week. When the
snow is covering local schools' outdoor tracks,
coaches and athletes are forced to get creative with
weekly practices, utilizing any other areas other
than the track, in order to prepare them for
competition.
This year as in
previous years, the indoor track and field program
had a great turnout in athletes. Going into
championship time, our Gladiators have worked hard
in each of their individual events to advance toward
sections and state qualifiers. In every event,
coaches must pick their top three athletes based on
time and consistency, in order to advance into the
next championship meet.
This year we have a
number of top athletes in the county for track and
field. They include boys Jordan McWatt, Steve
VanDoran, Dylan Simonson, Anthony Cuomo, James
Schnikter, Matt Buono, and Dan Dlugolecki. The girls
include Jaime Lisack, Brittany Foote, Jenny
Edmonson, Tina Wildrick, Meaghan Olin, Lucy
Hinchliffe, and Lauren Oettinger. We also have a
large group of younger athletes who have been a huge
part of the team and it will be great to see them
grow in the future.
We look forward to
seeing the outcome of the end of the season with
OCIAA championships on February 5-6 and sections on
February 14. Good luck to our runners with the rest
of the season!

Ski team strong as season heads to sections
By Coaches Bob McIntee and Tom Gilbert
After five weeks of
preparation in the gym and weight room, we finally
got on snow. Our race season started on January 5 at
Mt. Peter. Consistent cold weather enabled the ski
centers (Mt. Peter, Holiday Mt. and Belleayre) to
provide great conditions for racing.
On the girls' side,
Hannah Roebuck, our returning state qualifier, has
started strong with a number of top five finishes.
Close behind is newcomer Emily Burke. First year
racers Courtney Murphy, Sam Iannuzzi and foreign
exchange student Irene Garcia-Moreno round out the
squad. Unfortunately, we lost veteran racer Amanda
Canfield to injury early in the season.
Dan Bachman, our
boys' section qualifier, has maintained his strong
showing from last season. Ben Conley is showing
improvement week by week and Sal Ardizonne has
earned the third spot on the team. Ryan Henkler,
Josh Shih and James Hawkins are in a tight battle
for the fourth position.
At midseason it
appears we have five strong candidates for sections,
which will be held at Hunter Mt. on Tuesday,
February 9. Hannah Roebuck, Emily Burke and Courtney
Murphy look strong for the girls and Dan Bachman and
Ben Conley could qualify for the boys.
At the sections,
the top 10 boys and girls will move on to the state
meet to be held February 23-24 at Bristol Mt.

Goshen Wrestling Welcomes Youth Movement
By Coach Ed Killenberger and Assistant Coach
Nick Pantaleone
Having graduated four seniors from last season, the
Goshen Wrestling Team entered the 2009-10 season
with a multitude of talented underclassmen to
complement veteran captains Dennis Brigman and
Anthony Papa. Brigman, a senior, has compiled a team
best record of 24-3 and recently finished fourth in
the annual Minisink Valley Individual Tournament.
Fellow Captain Anthony Papa has a record of 15-9 and
finished third at the Minisink tournament. We look
forward to both of our captains to finish the
remainder of the season strong and peak during the
sectional tournament in mid February.
112 lb. eighth grader Lance Golubinski, has already
established himself as one of the top Goshen
grapplers this year compiling a 13-9 record. Varsity
Assistant Coach Nick Pantaleone stated “Lance is the
future of Goshen Wrestling. His work ethic,
leadership, and academic success exemplify the
student athletes who we want to represent this
program.” Lance’s early season success is
accompanied by his academic accolades as a member of
the Middle School National Junior Honor Society and
Math Club.
Fellow freshmen 119 lb. Lee Bush has also been
impressive with several key victories against
powerhouse schools Arlington and Suffern. Bush a
talented artist, and a multi-year award winner in
the school safety design contest, has been
commissioned by his coaches to adorn the walls of
our wrestling room with a painting depicting Goshen
Wrestling Pride.
Sophomore Tom Merenyi, 189 lbs., and newcomer Junior
Alan Conklin, 285 lbs., have been solid in the upper
weight classes and have helped lead the Gladiators
to several team victories against Highland, Liberty,
Ellenville, and Chester. First year wrestler senior
Rob Hansen has also been impressive in the 160 lb.
weight class showing improvement week by week.
Under the leadership of first year coaches and
Goshen Alumni, Ed Killenberger and Assistant Coach
Nick Pantaleone, the Gladiators have posted a 10-12
record, highlighted by a second team placing at our
very own Goshen Duals tournament.
The aforementioned record is a nine win improvement
from last seasons 1-9 mark. A contributing factor to
the increase in wins is the “open mat” nights hosted
by Coach Killenberger and Pantaleone throughout the
summer and fall. Team numbers has also increased
contributing to a full line-up, a first for Goshen
in quite some time.
The Goshen Wrestling Program also welcomed back 2005
section champion Demitri Laurent, Ty Sutherland and
Evan Search who volunteered their time and
expertise. The Gladiators are also looking forward
to a clinic organized by Coach Killenberger which
will feature legendary Lock Haven University
Wrestling Coach Carl Poff. This off-season, the
program will develop a “Mat Club” to develop the
youth wrestling program.

Killenberger at

Goshen Boys Basketball: Hard work, good effort,
coming up a little short
By Basketball Coach Joe Guarneiri
Playing the game of basketball with a
great deal of intensity, heart and desire has
not been a problem for the Goshen Boys Varsity
Basketball Team this year. The Gladiators
approach every game with a high level of energy.
Basketball is a
game, however, where it is beneficial to have some
height. The Gladiators have two players who stand
taller than six feet. Co-captain Michael Hughes
stands around 6’1” and junior Raeven Reivers goes
about 6’2”. After that, the majority of the team is
no taller than the average American, around 5’10”,
give or take an inch or two.
Lack of height
coupled with a competitive schedule and difficulty
at times finding the bottom of the net has left the
team with an overall record of 2 wins and 9 losses,
and a league record of 0 wins and 3 losses. That’s
not to say, however, that the team does not battle
and play competitively to the very end of each and
every game with tremendous pride and spirit.
The team is led by senior co-captains Michael Hughes
and Andrew Laskaris. Hughes has suffered from a sore
lower back and has not been able to play at 100
percent. He has looked much better recently, though,
and the hope is that he will finish the season with
a flurry of good games.
Other senior
contributors include Conor Boles, John Stephens,
Justin Rivera, Joe Leddy, Chris O’Connor, and new
comer to the sport Luis Ramirez. The juniors on the
team are Frantz Desire, Raeven Reivers, Kyle
Burnett, Conor Hughes, Kevin Alders and Anthony
Avery. Good luck in the remaining games this year.

The Lady Gladiators Varsity basketball team fights
through a tough schedule
By Coach Gus Lawson
The Lady Gladiators’ Varsity basketball team has
been highly competitive this season. The team's
record is currently five wins and six losses despite
playing a very difficult schedule comprised of class
AA non-league schools, top class B schools, and our
class A opponents. The team does post a 2-1 league
mark which puts us in an excellent position in terms
of qualifying for the section 9 class A tournament
next month.
The 2009-10 Lady Gladiators are senior co-captains
Kathleen Payne and Rylie Carpenter, seniors Chelsey
Locatell and Allison Cohen, juniors Tara Robinson,
April Crawford, Erin Van Dunk, Jenah George, Carlin
Koch, Courtney Fesko, and Amanda Chatergoon.
The team opened the season with a victory over the
class AA Middletown Middie Bears in the George
McGinnis Basketball Classic before falling to
perennial class B power Marlboro in tournament
final. The team travelled over to Florida and
defeated class C powerhouse S.S. Seward in the
opening round of the Spartan Invitational. The Lady
Gladiators returned home to the friendly confines of
Goshen to take on archrival and defending class A
champion Cornwall but unfortunately came up short.
The team rebounded from the Cornwall defeat with a
convincing victory over Liberty.
Next up was a visit
to class AA section 9 semi-finalist Warwick Valley
where the team fell in a spirited effort. The team
opened the new decade with a league victory on the
road over Port Jervis. Next up was class AA Valley
Central where we fell in defeat, followed by a trip
to another perennial class B power James I. O'Neill,
where we lost in barnburner. The team rebounded with
their best effort of the season thus far with a
sound road victory over league opponent Monticello
this past Wednesday, followed by a game against
cross-town rival Burke Catholic, where the team was
more than game but came up short in defeat.
The team plays home this Friday against class AA
Pine Bush, then must turnaround on Saturday and play
James I. O'Neill in a rematch in the Spartan
Invitational final at S.S. Seward. The Friday’s game
will also be a fundraiser for the American Cancer
Society in Coaches versus Cancer contest. There will
be a donation bucket and 50/50 raffle during the
game.
The team travels to
class AA Washingtonville on February 2 before
returning to league play with a rematch at Cornwall.
The team will return to Goshen for home contests
against Monticello and Port Jervis on February 10
and 16 before closing out the regular season with a
trip to class AA power Newburgh Free Academy on
February 18. The Monticello game will be another
Coaches versus Cancer contest with donations going
to the American Cancer Society. The home finale
against Port Jervis will be our senior recognition
and Meningitis awareness night in conjunction with
the National Meningitis Association.
The team believes that their best basketball is in
front of them and hopefully the difficult non-league
schedule will pay dividends in late February and
possibly into March. The team could certainly use
some support so come out and show some school
spirit.
