Students learn skills on the court during month long program
By Coaches Jen Forgione and Gus Lawson

April 28, 2010 - Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The Goshen girls basketball program held a month-long skills session for second through fifth graders. With a turnout of over 100 girls each night, the teachers and coaches got the children excited about and interested in basketball.

The program ran on Wednesday nights from 6-7 p.m. for second and third graders and from 7-8 p.m. for fourth and fifth graders. Each week, the girls focused on a new skill. They started out with offense the first two weeks. The girls learned about shooting, dribbling, and passing. These girls worked hard and listened carefully to become a triple threat on the court.

The third week was defense week. Each participant learned about the basics of defense; how to slide your feet, block a shot, and rebound. Boy, are these girls quick! With a little more practice, these girls will be playing dynamite defense.

Now that the players have learned about offense and defense, it was time to put it all together. The last week was fun for all. With four or five different competitions, the girls showed off their talent and everything the learned about basketball. Each player who came out for the program worked hard and had fun. For their great sportsmanship, each girl received a Gatorade on their way out the door. Keep up the great work girls, and keep practicing!

A special thank you to Jen Forgione (Second Grade Teacher and Coach), Cheryl Winship (Second Grade Teacher), Stephanie Shada (Second Grade Teacher), Gus Lawson (P.E. Teacher and Varsity Girls Basketball Coach), Shawn Kithcart (Basketball and Softball Coach), Brian Cestare (Basketball Coach), and Courtney Fesko (Varsity Basketball Player). With out your help, this program would not have been possible. Thanks for volunteering your time to help the students get involved.
