Ghost Detective shares spooky experiences with CJH
students

– The supernatural have invaded the C. J. Hooker
Middle School library! On April 19, students at the
C. J. Hooker Middle School were paid a visit by
Michael J. Worden, also known as the Ghost
Detective.
Worden, a detective with the Port Jervis Police
Department, has been investigating paranormal
activity since 2000, partnering with noted author
and researcher Linda Zimmermann. He visited students
to discuss his experiences and his new book, The
Ghost Detective. Two of his books were raffled off
to students.
Worden’s first experiences with ghosts occurred when
he was a child visiting his grandparents’ house in
Port Jervis. Worden would hear odd noises, such as
footsteps, doors closing and cabinets shutting. He
even saw the ghost of an old lady in one of the
bedrooms. As an adult, he and Zimmermann decided to
investigate the house using equipment such as
infrared cameras and audio recorders. While in the
front bedroom, they both simultaneously felt an
overwhelming sense of sadness and grief, that Worden
described it as “being a loss so great, it felt like
the loss of a child.” They also heard banging and
footsteps.
After tracing the deeds back to the 1800s and
visiting the local historical society, Worden
discovered that the house had belonged to Judge O.
P. Howell, a notable member of the community. In his
obituary, it read that Howell’s son had died of an
early age 17 years earlier, and that his father
never recovered. Worden believes that the Judge was
haunting his former house, looking for his son, who
had died from diphtheria at age 7.

Loughran, the Ghost Detective’s visit was yet
another ghostly experience for her students. During
the Halloween season, Loughran hosted “Terror
Tuesdays” to packed crowds, where she showed photos
of popular haunting spots.
