View a letter from the principal about the CJH dress code

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The C. J. Hooker faculty and staff are committed to maintaining an atmosphere that is always conducive to teaching and learning. As the warm weather approaches, I am asking for your guidance and support to ensure that our students abide by the dress code as outlined on page ten of the school planner your child received at the beginning of the school year.

The individual’s dress, grooming and appearance standards are listed as follows:

  1. Will be safe, appropriate, and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process;

  2. At the discretion of the school administrators, examples of inappropriate dress include but are not limited to the following: extremely brief garments such as very short shorts or skirts, tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines (front or back), and sheer garments. Please help us reinforce that this style of dress is not appropriate for school;

  3. Ensure that all types of undergarments (including bras and boxers) are completely covered by outer clothing;

  4. Include footwear at all times, provided that footwear that is a safety hazard not be allowed;

  5. Hats, hoods and other head coverings are not to be worn or carried in the building unless it is being used for religious/medical reasons or approved by administration.

  6. Not include items containing words or insignia that are vulgar, obscene, libelous, or denigrate others on account of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or disability; and

  7. Not promote and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs, and/or encourage other illegal or violent activities.

In addition, I would like to strongly advise against the use of “flip-flop” shoes during the school day. This type of footwear has been a safety hazard in the past.

I would like to thank you for your continued assistance. Should you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

William C. Rolon
Principal
